Mutation. Lorna can see and manipulate magnetism. This power is still very unrefined, and she has some difficulty controlling it. Though she has raw power, she lacks the ability to fine tune it, or concentrate on small, delicate tasks. She can weld two giant 'I' beams together without a huge amount of concentration, but couldn't nail two pieces of balsa wood to each other without damaging them.
She can also see the forces she manipulates, though only while actively trying to do so. When she's just reading or jogging, all she can see is all a normal person can see. When she's concentrating on her powers, she can see the visible light spectrum and the magnetic forces surrounding objects.
Personality. Lorna is a bouncy, cheerful person. She's friendly and outgoing, always eager to talk to new people. Usually she wears a wig to cover her hair, so when she's not wearing it, she feels a little awkward, and will often touch her hair, as though she's not sure that it's there anymore.
Beside talking to people (and Lorna can talk a lot), Lorna enjoys video games. The geeks at her college have embraced her wholeheartedly, and she had, in turn, learned their ways. She prefers musical games like DDR or Guitar Hero to violent games, and she's never far from her DS, which usually has a Mario or Pokemon game in it.
When Lorna is serious, it's usually because she's afraid or angry. She's sometimes patient, and sometimes quick tempered, depending on her mood, or the person annoying her. When she is angry, Lorna will yell, then leave. She's not a violent person, and she always tries to keep herself from picking or getting into fights. However, this doesn't stop her from being stubborn, and she is sometimes very opinionated, though it's a personality flaw she's always trying to work on.
History. Lorna was orphaned by a plane crash. She was taken in by friends of her father's family. They gave her their last name, and raised her as their own, despite the fact that she had bright green hair. It didn't matter so much when she was little. She'd wear a hat when they were out, and when they weren't, both parents thought that it suited her fairly well.
She was a bright, happy girl, always eager to see new things. She went on bike rides with her parents, and soon gained a love of the natural world that would persist her whole life. The only dark spot was school.
Outside of school Lorna could wear the cute hats her parents made for her (her favorite being one with green cat eyes and black ears that came out the top), but in school she was forced to wear a wig. The one time she took it off, during recess the first week of first grade, it resulted in her being expelled, and her parents moving away from Davis to Sacramento.
Sacramento was a whole different vibe. Her parents moved to a suburb close to the river, and Lorna had learned well enough that wearing her wig kept her safe. She made friends at her new school quickly, and her parents continued to foster her love of the natural world.
In high school, Lorna began thinking about joining the Air Force. Her powers hadn't manifested at that point, and she figured she would just shave her head at all times to keep her secret. Her parents were apprehensive, but knew that Lorna would do what she wanted anyway, so they promised to support her.
During a tour of one of the bases (Lorna's father was a mechanic that worked close to the base, and often talked to the men who worked there, which helped him arrange the tour), Lorna was unknowingly exposed to a nanobot virus. It had gotten loose from one of the labs, and seemed to seek her out specifically. She fainted on the car ride home, and soon began having trouble breathing. Her parents were afraid, and took her to the hospital.
On the car ride there, Lorna began to twitch slightly, and her eyes would open suddenly, and then close slowly, as though she kept waking up from a deep sleep. By the time they arrived at the hospital, Lorna was breathing easily again, and any sign that she had been ill at all was limited to the dampness of her clothing.
After that, though, strange things would happen around her. She would sneeze and things would jump around her, as though the force of it were projected into them. Her parents worried, but Lorna thought nothing of it, stubbornly believing that everything would be fine.
It wasn't until she went out of state to college that things got really bad. During an argument her brand new Macbook spontaneously shut down and never restarted. It was found to have been subject to a huge amount of magnetic energy, so much so that her motherboard was being used as a magnet in the breakroom of the repair shop it had been sent to.
She often had problems with computers, and people began to think she was a hacker. The geeks caught wind of this, and began to warm to her. Lorna was just grateful to fit in somewhere, and soon found that she actually liked a lot of the same things as her new friends. They helped her with her homework, and then they all went out in the quad and hit each other with foam weapons, or Nerf guns, or something. In exchange, she graced them with her presence, and her love of DDR.
Lorna studies Earth Sciences, and is contemplating getting a degree in Oceanography.

Third Person Writing Sample. Lorna sat in the Starbucks close to campus, putting the finishing touches on her essay for psychology. Her problem, as she thought of it, kept acting up, so she had a pen and paper. Later on she'd use the dictation software on her computer to get this in the format her teacher wanted, but she was worried that being even that close to her system would mess it up. It had been hard to do all her schoolwork like this, but on the plus side she had really good handwriting, and she was at least assured that she'd never be a video game addict.
She shoved a lock of the black wig she was wearing back, sighing a little. Her frapuccino was almost gone, and she still had nothing else to say about megalomania. It was kind of boring, really. Nothing was worse than being expected to write eight pages on something as boring as thinking you're better than everyone else.
Sample Journal Entry. Day three of exam week. Man, I am so wiped it's insane. I need to see if Weasle wants to study for genetics with me, but he's watching Fanboys for the eightieth time and won't pick up his phone. I'll have to send him a Star Trek e-card at some point, just to antagonize him.
Mom and Dad called today, and Mom's going to next day some cookies to me. Which just proves that I have the most awesome parents in the world.
Oh! That's my phone. Better be Weasle or I'm going to kick his ass. I'll write more later!
